Tenant Credit Check
Tenant credit check searches are common because your credit history can determine whether you can get an unsecured tenant
loan or not and even whether you are accepted as a tenant for a particular property.
Credit referencing and tenant screening are common methods that tenant companies (mortgage companies, loans companies, credit card companies,
landlords, employers, insurance companies, car loan companies) employ to decide the risk of lending money to a tenant or to decide
whether a tenant will be a good tenant for a landlord.
You may have been turned down or refused credit because of poor credit rating or adverse credit history. You may have been
turned down or refused a tenancy agreement because of bad credit history or ccjs, defaults and arrears that appear on your credit search. Most companies
will not tell you why you have been turned down but will say it is because you didn't pass the credit score or because of something adverse on
your credit report.
You should apply for your tenant credit check search. Tenants credit reports can be used for the following reasons
- To check that the credit report is correct
- To find out why you might have been declined
- To see how you can improve your credit rating
Anyone can obtain a copy of their credit history from agencies Equifax, Experian and CallCredit for as little as £2. There are
intermediary agencies that landlords and estate agents use so beware if you are a tenant being asked to pay a high fee for a
credit search report.
A tenants credit report can provide:-
- Information on credit cards and loans opened in your name
- A breakdown of your payment history
- Any negative account history that might identify items that may be adversely effecting you
- A record of companies that have reviewed your credit file in the past
If you see anything that should not appear on your credit report you should inform the credit check agency that has provided it to you (Experian,
Equifax, CallCredit) and tell them. They can put a warning on your report whilst you can also contact the police if you believe there are fraudulant
applications.
